Detailed in vivo mapping of brain anatomy, function, and metabolism remains a goal to be achieved in order to address public health challenges. Magnetic resonance imaging remains a preferred tool for meeting this need due to its noninvasive nature and relative accessibility in routine healthcare settings. The advent of artificial intelligence has driven the research community to collect data from increasingly large cohorts, giving rise to what is now known as population-based imaging, which allows digital health stakeholders to access databases containing up to hundreds of thousands of individuals. While the strategy of acquiring big data at the population level provides an initial statistical response to the challenges of developing digital tools for brain health, it does not fully address the need to access the diversity of organizational scales of the brain, which requires imaging instruments capable of covering scales ranging from the macroscopic to the microscopic.
The development of very high-field and extreme-field magnetic resonance imaging instruments and methods addresses this need, and the CEA’s NeuroSpin department was created for this purpose. During this presentation, we will explore how extreme-field imaging (11.7 tesla for humans and 17.2 tesla for small animals) enables in vivo access to the mesoscopic scale and allows us to investigate brain structure, function, and metabolism at unprecedented scales. We will also demonstrate how a strategy of deep brain phenotyping and individual-level big data collection can complement population-based imaging by enabling the development of digital tools capable of better elucidating the pathophysiological mechanisms at play at scales currently inaccessible with standard clinical instruments.
