慢性肾臟疾病是一个全球性的健康问题,也是高龄化社会公共卫生支出的巨大负担与隐忧。在台湾因肾臟衰竭须接受洗肾的人口居高不下,所耗费的医疗资源更佔健保支出之冠。

慢性肾衰的重要特徵之一是肾小管间质纤维化,病理表现是间质中产生过量的细胞外基质,及肾小管上皮细胞的萎缩,进而导致肾臟功能逐渐丧失。对於间质纤维化的详尽机制细胞外基质物理化学性质的变化、及基质变化如何影响细胞特性的改变、又或是細胞在疾病發展過程中,如何應對不同種細胞間交互的改變等,一直是腎臟纖維化過程中尚未釐清的課題。而其中最根本的問題是:纖維化本身是否可逆? 什麼程度可逆、可清除、又或是可被停止? 而什麼情況下,則會導致不可逆、又或是造成更全面性的影響? 我們藉由細胞及動物實驗模式的建立,希望能更全面了解慢性肾臟疾病发展的过程与机制。希望队学术知识奠定更多基础,更宏观的视野外,也期待对药物的发展,台湾社会经济有长远的建树。
