免疫系统在有微生物入侵时,会啟动且整合相关的抵御机制。有趣的是,共生菌是有益宿主的,但病原菌则会造成宿主的疾病甚至死亡,因此是宿主的免疫反应攻击的对象。免疫力的核心机制,有吞噬作用(由巨噬细胞等负责)和毒杀作用(由各类杀手细胞进行)等。我们感兴趣的,是动物的免疫系统,如何凭藉不同的因子,让各式免疫细胞能够灵活运用这两种关键的机制以达到防御健康的效果。我们主要研究的对象是海洋无脊椎动物,例如紫海胆、美丽海葵、海豆芽等及其共生菌。近期我们在这个领域的研究即发现,在具有后天免疫物种中负责製造高亲和力抗体的酵素,在无脊椎动物中就已经存在了!
