- As global attention focuses on the enormous computing power and chip performance required by artificial intelligence (AI), the growing importance of energy efficiency in enabling computational performance can no longer be overlooked. Power consumption in AI servers continues to rise, making highly efficient power delivery systems essential to supporting their immense computational demands. Power semiconductor devices play a critical role in these systems by regulating current, converting voltage, and minimizing power losses.
- However, power supplies for high-performance applications require power transistors capable of operating at switching frequencies in the megahertz range while handling currents exceeding 60 amperes on 48-V power lines. Conventional power devices cannot adequately meet these high-frequency and high-current requirements. Therefore, the development of high-efficiency gallium nitride (GaN) power devices and chips has become essential for next-generation power supply designs.
- Professor Hsien-Chin Chiu's research team has developed a novel 100-V GaN power device featuring a backside power delivery architecture. This research has been accepted for presentation at the prestigious International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM), which is recognized as the flagship conference of the semiconductor field. The work will be presented in the Advanced (Ultra-) Wide-Bandgap Power Devices and System Integration section. The innovative device incorporates a graded epitaxial structure design, which enhances thermal management and device reliability while reducing package parasitic effects and manufacturing costs. The technology is particularly suitable for power transistors and modules used in 48-V intermediate bus converters (IBCs) for high-performance AI data center servers.
